PED: Communicate Clearly With Neighbors and Industry

PED is a serious threat to pig farms around the country. To help limit the spread of the virus onto or off of your farm, you bear the responsibility of communicating clearly with allied industry and neighbors. When they know your expectations and protocols, they can better adjust their interactions with you and your farm. Below are some key points to share with these individuals as you work to eliminate, diminish or prevent PED on your farm.

If you are a PED positive farm

• Explain that your farm carries a virus that can easily infect other pig farms in the area.

• Ask that they adjust their routes so that your farm is the last farm stop of their day.

• Requiring further downtime – or time between farm visits – may be something to consider discussing with allied industry.

• If necessary, outline any biosecurity protocols they need to follow when entering your farm.

• Clearly mark the Line of Separation and explain the purpose of that line.

• Encourage a thorough wash of any vehicles that must cross your Line of Separation once they leave, and especially before visiting another pig farm.

If you are a PED negative farm

• Explain that a serious virus is spreading to pig farms across the country, and you are working to keep yours in negative status.

• Ask that they adjust their routes so that your farm is the first farm stop of their day.

• Requiring further downtime – or time between farm visits – may be something to consider discussing with allied industry.

• If necessary, outline any biosecurity protocols they need to follow when entering your farm.

• Limit ALL unnecessary human foot or vehicular traffic across the Line of Separation. Provide easy-to-access drop-off points on the “outside” of your farm for deliveries.

If vehicles must cross the Line of Separation, ask them to wash their vehicle immediately before coming to your farm, or provide them with facilities to thoroughly wash and disinfect their vehicle at the entrance to your farm.
